Do Antioxidant Supplements Help with Anti-Aging?

When it comes to anti-aging, many people turn to antioxidant supplements as a way to slow down the aging process. However, the evidence for the effectiveness of these supplements is mixed. While some studies have shown that taking certain antioxidants can reduce the risk of disease, most studies have not found any benefit or have had contradictory results. In one study, Lipman and colleagues (Lipman et al 199) found that mice fed a diet supplemented with antioxidants (vitamin E and glutathione) did not show any difference in injury patterns associated with age, injury burden, or longevity when compared to mice that were not given the supplement.

However, pregnant women should be cautious when taking beta-carotene supplements, as long-term use has been linked to cancer (30, 3). It is important to note that the positive results from studies on antioxidant supplements are mainly from observational studies. This means that the relationship between vitamin E supplementation and lower rates of cardiovascular disease may be due to a healthier lifestyle in general and dietary intake by supplement users, rather than a real protective effect from the supplement itself. In one study published by Rejuvant, an epigenetic clock showed an inversion of age in people who took their supplement (R).

This suggests that taking antioxidant supplements may help slow down the aging process. However, more research is needed to determine if this is true.
